Triggers

Beneficence Tanzania was founded by five development professionals who have worked in East and Central Africa for over 15 years, managing and implementing donor-funded development projects across various sectors. Through their extensive experience, they encountered numerous Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) struggling with fundamental issues that hindered their ability to create lasting impact.

Despite the increasing global interest in directly funding CBOs, it became evident that many of these organizations lacked the capacity to effectively manage and sustain their initiatives. Several key challenges stood out:

  • Limited Organizational Capacity: Many CBOs lacked the governance structures, financial management skills, and technical expertise needed to meet donor requirements
  • Over-Reliance on Natural Resources: The very communities tasked with conserving natural resources were often economically dependent on them, creating a cycle of unsustainable use.
  • Unrealistic Alternative Livelihoods: Some NGOs introduced income-generating projects that were impractical or culturally misaligned, leading to poor adoption and failure.
  • Internal Conflicts and Governance Issues: Leadership struggles, mismanagement, and conflicts of interest weakened many CBOs, limiting their effectiveness.
  • Lack of Sustainability Beyond Project Funding: Once donor-funded projects ended, many CBOs struggled to continue their work, lacking long-term financial sustainability.

Recognizing these challenges, Beneficence Tanzania was established as a platform to bring together global experts who are willing to volunteer their skills and expertise to support CBOs with world-class services. At the same time, it provides experts with a unique opportunity to participate in the meaningful grassroots initiatives that CBOs are leading on the ground.
